Black Seed (Nigella Seed)
Nigella sativa is a flowering plant from the family Apiaceae, native to Western Asia. Black cumin has been used for thousands of years in the Mediterranean region, both for medicinal purposes and as a spice.
Nigella sativa grows in Pakistan, India and the entire Middle East. The plant is often used as a seasoning or dressing in pies, salads, and cakes.
Black cumin grows in fields, on warm soils. It blooms in autumn. The white flowers are surrounded by hada (green, fern-like leaves). Nigella sativa plants can be grown in dry sandy soil but will not withstand frost.
Nigella sativa is native to the Middle East and South Asia, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years. Its name also reflects its appearance; black seeds come in a variety of shades from brown to dark green. The deep black color of organic black seed comes from an antioxidant called thymoquinone, which gives this seed its powerful medicinal properties.
